Kirtland family housing hosts event where residents, kids learn nutritious, fun recipes Published July 28, 2015 By Lee Ross Nucleus editor KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- The kitchen at Kirtland Family Housing was filled with children, laughter and lots of activity for "Cooking with Kids" on July 15. The class instructor, Judy Armgardt, said she's done quite a few classes with adults. The kids and their parents for this class, which was for kids age 6 to 10, are very enthusiastic, Armgardt said. Hope Hass, 9, said she liked working with raw chicken. "I like that it was soft, and I think it will taste really good," she said. As they worked, Armgardt explained food safety to the children and made them wash their hands after handling the raw meat. Staff Sgt. John Johnson, who works for the 377th Explosive Ordnance Division, said he emphasizes healthy eating in his home. He said he was impressed with the breading for the raw chicken, which was made with oats and cheese. "I love oats, and it's more nutritious than regular flour," he said. "It's really awesome to get my kids involved with cooking." The next Cooking with Kids class will be for children ages 11 and older. It will be at the base housing community center kitchen July 31, 10:30 a.m. For more information and to sign up, call 846-0139.
