AFGSC's top leaders visit Kirtland

KIRTlAND AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. --  During a three-day visit to Kirtland Air Force Base, Air Force Global Strike Command Commander Gen. Robin Rand and AFGSC Command Chief Master Sgt. Calvin Williams toured the base and its facilities to learn more about the installation's missions. 

During a commander's call, Rand thanked Kirtland Airmen for delivering sustained nuclear capabilities and providing support to enable seamless nuclear operations. He said the wing plays a vital role in supporting the AFGSC mission of providing strategic deterrence, global strike and combat support.

"We can take any target on the planet and hold it at risk within hours, and you all help make that happen," Rand said. "This wing is focused on delivering the global strike capability that separates us from every other MAJCOM in the Air Force. You should take pride in that."

Rand spoke at length about his three priorities: mission, Airmen and families. He encouraged Airmen to support these priorities by building themselves on a foundation of the core values. 

"We are in a profession of arms," he said. "This occupation requires a dedication that other occupations don't. If we are going to do the job right, if we are going to take care of each other properly, we have to build on a solid foundation. Build that foundation on integrity, service before self and excellence in all we do."

Rand encouraged Airmen to submit suggestions on what senior leadership could do better in support of his priorities. He also emphasized the importance of being fit, as well as exercising character and showing Air Force families appreciation for the support they provide.

Williams also spoke at the commander's call, thanking Kirtland Airmen and their families for their dedication to the Air Force. 

"I want to say thank you for the amazing work you do day in and day out, but more importantly thank you to your families," Williams said. "The support they provide us is incredible."

Williams said enlisted members should not worry about Air Force level changes, but should focus on working hard, studying and performing at a high level.

It was Rand's and William's first immersion trip to Kirtland since the 377th Air Base Wing realigned to AFGSC in October. The realignment was part of a move designed to enhance operational and maintenance support to the nuclear mission. He said the information he gathered at Kirtland was "priceless," and that it would help him better support the air base wing and its missions.

"Why do we do these visits? It's so we can learn about you and what you do and why you do it," Rand said. "Because of this visit, I'm able to advocate for you more effectively."
