Maltz Challenge to honor fallen heroes Published Feb. 26, 2016 By Kirtland Public Affairs KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- The Drug Enforcement Agency's 10th Annual Maltz Challenge will be held at the USAF Pararescue and Combat Rescue Gym Mar. 11 from 7 to 11:30 a.m. The fitness challenge commemorates fallen hero Master Sgt. Michael Maltz, an Air Force pararescuer who was killed during a rescue mission in Afghanistan March 23, 2003. Maltz was survived by a family member serving in the DEA, who initiated the challenge to honor his memory. The competition will also honor fallen heroes US Army Private First Class Landon Giles, Officer Gregg "Nigel" Benner of the Rio Rancho Police Department and Officer Daniel Webster of the Albuquerque Police Department. This year's event is a collaboration between the Air Force PJ School and the DEA's and the FBI's Albuquerque offices. "This is a great opportunity for camaraderie within the law enforcement and military community and serves to honor our fallen service members," said Sean Waite, the assistant special agent in charge of the DEA's Albuquerque District Office. The challenge is free and anyone with access to the base is encouraged to participate. The cross-fit style competition features a 400-meter run, and challenges in pullups, dips, pushups, situps and more. There is also a half Maltz option and modifications can be made to accommodate all fitness levels. New this year is a team challenge with the winning group receiving a traveling trophy.
