Kirtland Air Force Base racquetball players looking for friendly competition and a way to find other players have a chance to do both this summer.

A Summer Racquetball Challenge Ladder is starting.

"My main intent is to provide a fun way for people to work out," said organizer Kendahl Johnson of Kirtland Public Affairs.

With the summer heat outside, Johnson said, the challenge offers an indoor activity that doesn't involve a treadmill or indoor track.

In a challenge ladder, participants are ranked and can challenge someone one or two rungs ahead of them. As players win, they can move up the ranks.

"There are no prizes, really -- just bragging rights," Johnson said.

Anyone allowed to use base racquetball courts can participate.

Players with skill levels from beginner to advanced are welcome, although they should know the basic rules and techniques of the game. Johnson will initially construct rankings based on people's own evaluation of their skill.

The ladder's structure will have competitors playing people at the same level and moving up as they improve.

Johnson will help participants share their contact information so they can connect with their next opponent and arrange a time to play that's convenient for both.

"It's a way for racquetball players to meet each other, so after the league is done, you'll have a list of potential opponents," he said.

He's aiming for the ladder to start July 1 and run through September, but said it could continue indefinitely if there's enough interest.

"You only have to play one game a week, but you can play more if you like," Johnson said.

Although the challenge ladder isn't endorsed or run by the Fitness Center, matches take place at the base racquetball courts. Johnson said the Fitness Center has equipment people can check out, but he recommends players have their own, especially eye protection.
