KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- Team Kirtland along with families and law enforcement partners form the Albuquerque Police Department gathered on Hardin Field to commence the beginning of Police Week at Kirtland Air Force Base, N.M., May 11, 2026.
Col. Matthew Foisy, 377th Security Forces Group commander, welcomed the crowd and shared opening remarks, saying, “The camaraderie we share in this profession of Law Enforcement and Security is unique because it is built on absolute, uncompromising trust.”
For the Air Force, Police Week is a time to recognize Security Forces Airmen and remember Defenders who made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting their bases, missions and communities.
Throughout the week, the 377 SFG held several events, including a K-9 competition, ruck march, shooting competition and an obstacle course challenge, highlighting the work Security Forces perform each day.
The week ended with a closing ceremony to honor Defenders past and present. As Col. Justin Secrest, 377th Air Base Wing and installation commander, delivered final remarks, he noted, “This week is about the men and women who didn’t come home. We are here to honor the professionals who stood the line when it mattered most.”
National Police Week was established in 1962 when President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation naming May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week surrounding it as Police Week. Since then, communities across the country have used this time to honor law enforcement officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.
