KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, NM. -- February’s Airman’s Story shines a light on the journey of TSgt Bradley Engelmann, a dedicated MH-139 Special Mission Aviator Instructor at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama. His path to the skies was filled with determination, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to achieving his dreams.
Born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, Engelmann started his professional life in construction, working for four years there after high school. However, he soon realized he wanted more—something beyond his comfort zone. Inspired by his brother’s service in the Army, he set his sights on enlisting in the Air Force. But his dream was met with an initial roadblock: he did not meet the weight standards for enlistment. Rather than giving up, Engelmann took the challenge head-on, shedding an impressive 65 pounds to meet the requirements. At 22 years old, he successfully enlisted, eager to pursue a career in aviation.
Despite his aspirations, Engelmann was initially assigned to the ground radio and satellite communications career field. Undeterred, he dedicated himself to the role for three years until an opportunity arose in 2014 to become a Combat Readiness Instructor at Robins Air Force Base, Georgia. His time as an instructor was filled with challenges and interesting opportunities, and in 2017, he finally achieved his dream of becoming a Special Missions Aviator. Graduating from initial training, he began working with the UH-1N Huey helicopters and was soon stationed at Minot Air Force Base, North Dakota, where he served until 2023.
As the Air Force prepared to introduce the cutting-edge MH-139A helicopter, Engelmann seized the chance to train on the new platform and become a part of the newly established 24th Helicopter Squadron at Maxwell AFB.
Reflecting on his journey, Engelmann expressed deep gratitude for the opportunities the Air Force has given him. “Some of my favorite memories have been overcoming challenges alongside my teammates—where some of the hardest times turned into the fondest memories,” he shared. His dedication extends beyond his military career though; in 2021, he achieved a personal milestone by completing his first marathon which was an especially meaningful accomplishment given his initial weight loss journey a decade earlier.
TSgt Engelmann’s story is one of perseverance, transformation, and dedication to service. We thank him for his commitment and look forward to seeing the incredible things he will continue to achieve in the future!
