Kirtland Air Force Base, NM. -- The 58th Special Operations Wing (SOW) has expanded its training resources by partnering with Double Eagle II Airport in Albuquerque to establish the new Howard Drop Zone (DZ).
Named in honor of MSgt Lynn Howard, the first female loadmaster for the MC-130H aircraft and a long-serving instructor at the 58th SOW, this DZ enhances the wing's capabilities for training aerial delivery operations. DZ’s are areas used to practice aerial deliveries and are essential to MC-130J aircrew for honing the skills needed to deliver supplies accurately from the air.
“The new drop zone adds an additional training location for the wing, increasing the training capacity for the 58th SOW and further builds our relationships with the local community,” says Maj. Matthew Olivero, Wing Weapons and Tactics Officer.
The Howard DZ will be used for initial aerial delivery exercises as part of the 58th SOW’s MC-130J aircrew curriculum. Students will practice delivery techniques two to three times a week, preparing to deploy anything from heavy equipment, rescue supplies, and aid packages among other supplies needed for missions after they graduate.
By utilizing a local airport for these exercises, the Howard DZ not only deepens the wing’s partnership with Albuquerque but also helps reduce noise impacts on nearby residents by relocating flying operations further from the city.
Performing aerial deliveries requires teamwork and precision, and this new DZ will help the wing continue one of its vital missions in producing the best aircrew for the U.S. Air Force.
