Energy poster contest open to Kirtland community Published Feb. 20, 2009 By Staff Sgt. Sam Hymas 377th Air Base Wing Public Affairs KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, New Mexico -- The Kirtland Community Energy Conservation Working Group is sponsoring a poster contest to increase awareness of energy issues affecting the base and the people who live and work here. The theme for the contest is "Save Energy!" and posters should illustrate creative ideas people can use to save energy or promote green energy. The winning posters will be used to advertise the upcoming Earth, Wind and Sun Event, a conference hosted by Sandia National Laboratories designed to make people more aware of conservation and alternative energy sources. "We believe the use of energy by our nation is a national security issue, and demands our full attention," said Bruce Burnham, Energy Conservation Working Group member and chief of the Research and Epidemiology Branch at the Air Force Safety Center. "Furthermore, we understand that energy conservation will require major change in the thoughts and actions of everyone in our community. At a basic level we hope this is a small step toward changing the culture of the Kirtland community toward energy use. We hope this poster contest will help elevate the awareness of energy conservation in those of our community who wouldn't be reached by other methods of communication," he said. There are two categories in the contest -- age 12 and under and age 13 and older. Entries can be submitted on 8.5 inch by 11 inch paper at designated elementary schools and the base library and digital submissions can be e-mailed to energyconservation@kirtland.af.mil. The submission deadline is Feb. 27. Participation in the contest is limited to the Kirtland AFB community including all tenant organizations such as Sandia National Laboratories and the Department of Energy. "Participation in the contest can vary from entering a poster, to carefully viewing each submission," said Mr. Burnham. "We hope these posters will spark innovative thought toward conservation, and help our community to visualize new and exciting ways to conserve energy. By engaging our youth, we are enlisting the leaders of tomorrow in this exciting effort." All entries should include name, age, phone number and e-mail address so contest officials can contact the winners.
