In a July 21 ceremony, Dr. L. Wayne Brasure, executive director of the Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center, was promoted to the Senior Executive Service, the civilian equivalent of a general officer. Brigadier General Everett H. Thomas, AFNWC commander, presided.

General Thomas welcomed members of Team Kirtland, friends and family to the ceremony and spoke about his new executive director.

"Everyone remembers certain key moments in their lives and they reflect on how they got here," said General Thomas. "Today is one of those days for Lloyd Wayne Brasure and his family. "

Dr. Brasure spent 22 years in the Air Force, retiring as a lieutenant colonel in 2003. He then worked in private industry. He came into federal service in 2006, where he first worked for the Air Force Nuclear Weapons and Counterproliferation Agency at Kirtland AFB and then for the Department of Energy in Albuquerque before being selected for his current position of Executive Director of the Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center.

"I'll tell you the real reason we need to thank General Thomas here today," said Dr. Brasure. "General Thomas created this position. We now have a senior executive G.O. equivalent civilian in the Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center."

Dr. Brasure went on to say that there is now a viable career pipeline for civilians and Airmen in the challenging nuclear weapons career fields.

"It is now up to us to sustain that pipeline," Dr. Brasure said. "Sustainment comes from mentoring and opportunity, by letting our people, both military and civilian, know that there is a path forward to senior leadership. That's what today is all about."
