AFOSI is a unique career field that is both challenging and rewarding. As a premier federal investigative agency, AFOSI identifies, exploits and neutralizes criminal, terrorist and espionage threats to Air Force and Department of Defense personnel and resources. To accomplish these goals, AFOSI agents receive highly specialized training in investigative processes, firearms, crime scenes, counterintelligence and other specialized skills. Enlisted Airmen may apply for special agent duty with AFOSI once they've first served in another career field. Staff sergeants with five to eight years time in service and technical sergeants with less than 12 years time in service and less than two years time in grade may apply. Senior airmen who have a line number for staff sergeant and are exceptional performers may be considered. Additionally, senior airmen with special skills, such as foreign languages, may be considered outside of the guidelines above on a case-by-case basis. Applicants must have at least 12 months time on station before acceptance for AFOSI. First-term, four-year enlistees must apply between their 35th and 43rd months of enlistment and first-term, six-year enlistees must apply between their 59th and 67th months. Most enlisted AFSCs apply to be general field agents. Field agents work a wide variety of violent crimes, drugs, fraud and counter intelligence investigations. Certain enlisted Air Force Specialty Codes with intermediate to advanced computer or electronic skills may be eligible to apply for information operations investigations or technical services specialty agent fields. Active-duty officers with less than six years commissioned service may retrain into AFOSI from most career fields.
