The power of a smile Published Jan. 21, 2011 By Brian Brackens 377th Air Base Wing Public Affairs Kirtland Air Force Base, NM -- Every day, thousands of people come through the gates of Kirtland Air Force Base. Airman 1st Class Jamileh Wilson is one of the Security Forces Airmen who greets them. One thing that you'll notice about her is that she loves to smile. Because of this, people call her "Happy" Wilson. "I'm motivated by people," said Airman Wilson. "They make me smile. I even smile at people who look like they're having a bad day, because you never know, that smile could lift them up and make their day. Airman Wilson is from the small town of Inverness, Fla. and has been in the Air Force since Aug. of 2009. She said that she loves her job. "I like the people here," she said. "I like the people I work with and I'm always happy to see them." Airman Wilson credits her parents with instilling her positive attitude toward people. "My parents taught me to always respect people," she said. "They taught me to listen to people and if someone was having a bad day, not to make it worse. They also taught me to be professional, no matter who it is." Bobby Wright, co-director for the Wayland Baptist University campus at Kirtland AFB, met Airman Wilson during one of his trips to campus. He said that she's a great influence. "She's such a pleasant person," said Mr. Wright. "She's professional, alert and courteous, and in my opinion, being a former security policeman and understanding how tough the squadron is, she is such a positive influence for the base." Airman Wilson's plans for the future include becoming an English teacher. The advice Airman Wilson gives is to never give up.
