Memorial Day is a time of remembrance Published May 26, 2011 By Col. Robert L. Maness 377th Air Base Wing commander Kirtland Air Force Base -- Remembering the sacrifices of those we have served with and those who came before us is what Memorial Day is all about. Kirtland warriors like Staff Sgt. Christopher Frost, a Public Affairs Specialist assigned to the 377th Air Base Wing, who was killed in Iraq when the helicopter he was riding in crashed in March 2008. Staff Sgt. Travis Griffin, a 377th Security Forces Squadron "Defender", who was killed when his vehicle encountered a roadside bomb in Iraq in April 2008. Maj. Steven Plumhoff, a pilot assigned to the 58th Special Operations Wing, who was killed when his helicopter crashed in Afghanistan in November 2003. It is easy to take for granted the freedom and opportunities that we all share, but it is important to remember that our freedom does not come free, but at a very high cost. As we observe this Memorial Day, take a moment to reflect on those who have given the ultimate sacrifice. As you reflect, remember why we fight -- we fight to defend, protect and preserve the foundation of our nation's freedom. While the exact origins of Memorial Day are not known, the reason behind the observance is the same - to honor those who have defended our freedoms with their lives. This Memorial Day, not only should we remember the sacrifice of Kirtland warriors like Sergeants Frost and Griffin and Major Plumhoff, but the sacrifices of all those who gave their lives in the defense of our nation.
