Tijeras Arroyo Golf Course to host first night golf tournament Published Aug. 11, 2011 By Todd Bailey Nucleus staff writer Kirtland Air Force Base -- If you drive by the Tijeras Arroyo Golf Course on Saturday night and you see several falling stars, they actually may be golf shots. The golf course is hosting a Glowball Night Golf Tournament at 6 p.m. The cost of the four-man scramble is $15 per person, plus green fees. The entry fee includes a dinner and glow balls and glow sticks needed for play. "I don't think this is something that has ever been done here at Kirtland," said Tijeras Arroyo Golf Course Manager Zack Adamson. "I have been in and put together night golf tournaments before and if you have never done it, it's a different and fun experience." Limited to the first 12 teams, Adamson said last week there was still room to play. "For someone who has never played night golf, one of the trickier things about it is getting in the right direction," Adamson said. "You have to get the club head and your body lined up right, because you aren't going to see anything out there but a ball glowing on the ground." The tournament will have a shotgun start as the teams play the front nine in the early evening, then break for dinner. Kirtland Federal Credit Union joins the golf course as a tournament sponsor and both will provide some door prizes for golfers to win. While dinner is taking place, the course staff will be "lighting up" the back nine holes. Flags at each green will be wrapped in glowing lines and each team member will be given glow balls and glow sticks. "The golfers are going to have to adjust on how far they normally hit their golf balls," Adamson said. "With the glow balls, you normally get about 75 to 80 percent ball flight compared to a regular golf ball." "Everyone that I have talked to who had never played night golf said how much fun it was," Adamson said. "It's another way to enjoy a sport we all love to play and to have fun doing it."
