Kirtland joins fight against hunger Published Sept. 9, 2011 By Danny Monahan 377th Air Base Wing Public Affairs KIRTLAND AFB, N.M. -- In its effort to support the 2011 "Feds Feed Families" program from June 1 to Aug. 31, Team Kirtland raised nearly 4,000 pounds of provisions for those in need. "As always, once the word got out, several organizations wanted to do their part," said Senior Master Sgt. Curtis Green, 377th Force Support Squadron and Team Kirtland "Feds Feed Families" coordinator. "We had help from the Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center, 377th Air Base Wing, 58th Special Operations Wing, the Defense Commissary Agency, and many more. It was a total team effort." "Feds Feed Families" is a government wide effort led by the Chief Human Capital Officers Council, in partnership with the Office of Personnel Management, the Department of Defense and the Department of Agriculture to collect non-perishable goods for food banks across the country. The DOD's goal was to gather 733,800 pounds of provisions. The military services nearly doubled the goal, gathering 1,423,414 pounds. Like the DOD, Team Kirtland nearly doubled its goal of 2,000 pounds. "Team Kirtland is donating the 3,835 pounds of provisions to the Airman and Family Readiness Center food pantry and the Albuquerque Roadrunner Food Bank," said Green. Items donated include canned fruits and vegetables, cereal, paper products, condiments and more. "Team Kirtland became involved in late July, when the program was expanded to bases throughout the U.S. trying to reach Feds Feed Families' goal of raising two million pounds," said Green. "So to think Team Kirtland was raising about 1,000 pounds of food a week is pretty astonishing." Feds Feed Families may have ended here on base, but people can donate year-round to the Airman and Family Readiness Center and local area food banks, said Green. "Many Team Kirtland organizations collected food for this worthy cause," said Green. "Thanks to all the men and women from Team Kirtland who contributed to this campaign and made it successful."
