A child safety seat clinic will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14 at the Kirtland Air Force Base Commissary parking lot.

Three out of four car seats are improperly installed, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

"We encourage everyone with a child safety seat to come out and make sure it is installed correctly," said Chrisan Smith, Family Advocacy outreach program manager.

Certified child safety seat technicians from Safer New Mexico Now will inspect each car seat and make adjustments, as necessary. To help ensure the car seat is facing the correct way and is the appropriate design for the child's age, parents are encouraged to bring their children along.

If a car seat is defective, on a recall list or does not fit the child using it, technicians will replace it with a free one, provided by Safer New Mexico Now, at the clinic.
Because it takes about 15 to 20 minutes per car seat, Smith advises parents to give themselves plenty of time.

The clinic will be conducted in memory of Denise Reese, who worked at Kirtland AFB for more than 20 years and dedicated her time during many child safety car seat clinics here.

Her children, Kristen Reese-Mirabal, Mick Reese, Jesse Reese and Michelle Gaps, are making a donation to Safer New Mexico Now in memory of their mother and said they hope to be at the clinic.

"Denise was instrumental in bringing car seat clinics to Kirtland and was extremely proud to be able to ensure the safety of our Team Kirtland children," said Smith.

The clinic's hosts are Safer New Mexico Now, Kirtland AFB First Sergeants Council and Family Advocacy.
