Snow-covered peaks await skiers, boarders and hikers Published Dec. 16, 2011 By Jonathan Rejent Nucleus staff writer Kirtland Air Force Base, NM -- Whether you prefer hiking up a white-capped mountain in a pair of snowshoes or flying down one with a pair of skis or a snowboard strapped to your feet, Outdoor Recreation has your snow-sport cravings covered. Two lunar snowshoe hikes at the Sandia Crest are scheduled each month on the Fridays closest to the full and new moon; $20 and includes transportation, guides, rental equipment and a cup of hot chocolate. Ski trips fall on the weekends, take up most of the day and are subject to change depending on attendance. Approximate costs range from $40 to $100 and depend on affiliation (civilian or active duty); price includes transportation, rental equipment and a lift ticket. "(For ski trips) we travel to any resort in New Mexico, as well as Purgatory and Wolf Creek (both in Colorado)," said Dan Isaac, Outdoor Rec adventure programmer. Issac explained that trips to either of the Colorado resorts are overnight ventures, scheduled by reservation only and dependent on participation. Prices will vary during these outings due to lodging expenses. The next lunar snowshoe hike is 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., Thursday. The next ski trips are Jan. 7 at Sipapu Ski Resort and Jan. 8 at Sandia Ski Area. For reservations or more information, call Outdoor Rec at 846-1499.
