377 MDG to support Patient Safety Awareness Week Published March 2, 2012 By Jonathan Rejent Nucleus staff writer KIRTLAND AFB, N.M. -- The 377th Medical Group will support the National Patient Safety Foundation during Patient Safety Awareness Week from March 4 to 10. Each year in observance of PSAW, Air Force medical facilities and civilian counterparts work to raise awareness at the local level and educate patients on how to become more involved in their own healthcare. The week is also meant to foster partnership activities between hospitals and their patient communities. "Health information may be confusing so being involved in your own care can help you understand how to get better and how to stay well," said Terry Duke, 377 MDG patient safety manager. The National Patient Safety Foundation invites hospitals and healthcare organizations around the world to join in Patient Safety Awareness Week. This year's theme -- "Be Aware for Safe Care" -- aims to educate every member of the health care team, from patients to providers, on the importance of patient safety. "In order to take care of yourself you need to know what your main concern is, how to maintain your health, and what the signs and symptoms are that need medical attention," said Duke. "With this knowledge, the healthcare team can optimally provide the best care to our patient population." Duke said being involved in your own health care can also reduce visits to the doctor and prevent the need for urgent care and emergency room visits. Col. Steven Reese, 377 MDG commander, said he is proud to continue supporting the program, as the 377 MDG has done since 2005. While the Med Group supports patient safety all year, there will be additional staff education programs focused on patient safety goals nationwide during the campaign. Duke will emphasize health care safety roles and answer questions from 8 to 11 a.m. in the Med Group lobby.
