Keeping stormwater clean is everyone’s business

Rain that falls on Kirtland Air Force Base either percolates into the ground or becomes stormwater runoff that flows over both the land and impervious surfaces, such as streets, parking lots, driveways and sidewalks.

This stormwater can pick up dripped vehicle fluids, cigarette butts, plastic bags, bottles and other pollutants that flow into gutters, storm sewers and arroyos, eventually discharging into the Rio Grande. Untreated stormwater discharges can adversely affect water quality in arroyos and the Rio Grande for wildlife, recreational uses and drinking-water supplies.

Kirtland AFB is responsible for ensuring that its stormwater is clean by eliminating sources of pollution.

To report sources of pollution or for more information about the installation's stormwater program, call the Kirtland AFB Water Quality Program office at 853-5443.
