Drop the phone and buckle up

In recent months, there has been a significant increase in the number of people not wearing seat belts while driving on Kirtland Air Force Base.

Research has shown when lap and shoulder seat belts are used properly, the risk of fatal injury to front seat passengers is reduced by 45 percent and the risk of moderate-to-critical injury is reduced by 65 percent.

Additionally, there has been an increase in using cell phones without a hands-free device while driving. In some cases, individuals have been seen violating both policies simultaneously. Nationwide, approximately 6,000 deaths and 500,000 injuries a year occur because of distracted driving.

Drivers who violate these policies risk losing their driving privileges on base, and may face other administrative or disciplinary actions. Military and civilian violators will be ticketed for not wearing their seat belts. In addition, those caught using cell phones, without hands-free devices, or texting while driving will be punished as well.

Points are assessed to an individual's on base driving record in accordance with Air Force Instruction 31-218, Motor Vehicle Traffic Supervision. Failure of operator or occupants to use available restraint system devices while moving (operator-assessed points) results in two points.

Driving while physically using cell phone falls under other moving violations (involving driver behavior only) and results in 3 points.

Drivers who incur 12 points in 12 months or 18 points in 24 months may have their installation driving privileges suspended for 12 months.

Unfortunately, not everyone takes advantage of the proven effectiveness of seat belts or refrains from the use of cell phones while driving.

The loss of even one Airman, civilian, contractor or Air Force family member is unacceptable, especially when that loss is preventable.
The 377th Security Forces Squadron is committed to enforcing all traffic safety laws IAW DOD Directives and standards.

Due to the increase of reported violations, security forces, in conjunction with wing safety, will be increasing selective enforcement activities on Kirtland Air Force Base. Violators will be cited.
