Workshop for military parents and children

The Museum of the American Military Family and Brats without Borders present "A Life in Transit: Growing Up Military," a workshop for military parents and their children age 12 and up, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Nov. 10 at the Kirtland AFB Chapel.

Mobility, deployment, the culture shock of reintegration, even the racial alienation some children feel -- let alone death and injury -- can take its toll.

Brats are tough and hide their feelings well, so it requires an astute adult to see beyond their rough exteriors, to help them build on their strengths, navigate the pitfalls, and prepare for the future.

Based on more than 12 years of research, Brats Without Borders' founder and executive director, Donna Musil, a former Army brat and writer/director of the award-winning documentary film, "BRATS: Our Journey Home," will lead these informative sessions.

Using a combination of instruction and interaction, "A Life in Transit" offers suggestions, strategies and resources to help parents and child-care professionals be the guides these children need to become strong, independent adults.

The workshop covers:

-- Where the words "brat" and "TCK" come from and what they mean.

-- What the research says about growing up brat/TCK - the good, the bad, the ugly, and the beautiful (and what, if anything, can be done about it).

-- How to validate a brat's feelings and build a strong sense of self and belonging.

-- How to recognize a troubled brat (even if they're making straight A's)

-- What children need to know before they leave the military/TCK environment.

-- Words of wisdom from adult brats.

-- Why brats/TCKs need you to be their strongest advocate
