Kirtland AFB motorcycle riders gain new online resource Published April 12, 2013 By John Cochran 377th Air Base Wing Public Affairs KIRTLAND AFB, N.M. -- Motorcycle riders at Kirtland AFB, and people who would like to ride, now have an online resource that provides a wealth of useful information. The "Kirtland Air Force Base Riders" website, https://sites.google.com/site/kafbriders/home, includes a training course calendar for people who want to sign up for free instruction in any of three on-base courses certified by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation. Current and future riders can also review requirements and gain access to other material related to safe and enjoyable riding. The "Basic Rider Course" is a two- or three-day program for new riders or those who want a refresher on fundamental skills. Instruction begins with academics and continues with practical exercises on a closed training range. BRC students who successfully complete the academic and skill requirements are eligible to have the motorcycle endorsement added to their drivers' licenses. A more advanced training class called the "Basic Rider Course 2" is available to help experienced riders enhance their proficiency. BRC 2 is a half-day session on the training range that combines discussion with skills practice. The third available training curriculum is the "Military SportBike Rider Course," targeted to experienced riders who currently ride sport bikes and have valid motorcycle licenses or endorsements. The MSRC includes about three hours of academics and five hours on the training range. Students taking on-base training courses will need to provide their own motorcycles, as well as the required personal protective equipment (Department of Transportation-approved helmet, full-fingered gloves, long-sleeved shirt, long pants, over-the-ankle footwear and shatter-resistant eye protection). Current vehicle registration and proof of insurance is also required when students ride motorcycles to and from the course. For all motorcycle courses taught on base, active-duty military and National Guard members have enrollment priority. All others affiliated with the base will be placed on a standby list and notified approximately one week before their desired course start date when space is available. MSF courses are also available in the community. For more information, go to http://nm-msp.org and select the "Find a Rider Course Near You" link.
