Kirtland defender to run AF Marathon for charity Published May 10, 2013 By Kendahl Johnson 377th Air Force Base Public Affairs KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- When a Kirtland defender runs the Air Force Marathon in September, he will be racing to help raise money for a cause. Tech. Sgt. Scott Borlinghaus, executive for the 377th Security Forces Group, was selected to the "Dragon Slayers," a team of 49 runners who will be racing to help raise money for the Air Force Enlisted Village. He will be the sole representative from Air Force Materiel Command. "It's huge honor to be selected, knowing I'm helping to support a great cause," Borlinghaus said. "It being the Air Force marathon makes it even more special. There is a lot of tradition behind that race." The AFEV is a charity partner of the marathon and has a goal of raising $75,000 from the race to help provide homes for surviving spouses of Airmen and to mothers of current active-duty Airmen. Overall, the AFEV seeks to raise about $15 million to fund about 75 new homes. Each runner selected for the marathon commits to raising a minimum of $500, but Borlinghaus has set his sights much higher; he plans to raise at least $3,000. John Dougherty, 377th Air Base Wing command chief, said each AFMC wing has committed to raise money, and all AFMC funds raised will be donated to the AFEV in Borlinghaus's name. The chief said he would like to see the entire base get involved, and plans to assist with events like a command-wide push-up contest. "If everyone on base donated just a few dollars, we would far surpass our goal," the chief said.
