1st Lt. Jason Holzman, Air Force Research Laboratory program manager, has been named the Western Region Company Grade Officer of the year. Holzman was chosen out of the 43 bases that comprise the Western Region.

"The award is done through the Company Grade OfficerS Council, and each base's CGOC nominates one CGO to compete at the regional level," said Holzman. "The regional executive board then gets together and out of those submissions, picks the best one to compete at the Air Force level."

The award is broken down into three sections, with 40 bullet points in total. The first part is contributions made to the CGOC and is comprised of 20 bullet points. The next part is leadership skills, with 12 bullet points, and eight bullet points for other accomplishments.

"The majority of what I did in the CGOC was that I created a Junior ROTC liaison program here at Kirtland," said Holzman.

Holzman has been working on the program for almost a year. It currently has 31 volunteers who work with 13 local Albuquerque public schools. The volunteers support the high schools, which includes helping to raise money for the program and getting coaches for after-school programs.

Holzman's other accomplishments include coordinating the base Holocaust Remembrance ceremony, sponsoring a national engineering challenge team, creating a high school "Cyber Patriot" team and organizing a senior leader space conference.

"The bulk of what I provided the CGOC was extending the scope of what they did in the community," said Holzman.

Holzman will now compete at the Air Force level against the Eastern, European, Pacific and Deployed regions. The winner will be announced at the end of June.
