Beginning August 1, the active duty service commitment an Airman incurs when requesting to transfer his or her Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits to a dependent will be changing for certain individuals.

After the Post-9/11 GI Bill was introduced, temporary rules for service members nearing retirement were approved, allowing them to incur anywhere from no additional time to three years of service when they transferred benefits, depending upon their retirement eligibility date. This waiver period expires July 31. Effective August 1, all active-duty Airmen will be required to serve a four-year active duty service commitment at the time they elect to transfer benefits to a family member.

If you became retirement eligible during the timeframe of August 1, 2009, to July 31, 2012, are still on active duty, and have not requested to transfer your Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits to a dependent but wish to do so, contact Cathy Earl at 846-1737 or cathy.earl@kirtland.af.mil.
