Members of the 377th Air Base Wing’s Violence Prevention Program have begun the 2019 Sexual Assault and Suicide Prevention training, which is comprised of three different curricula: a 60-minute Multi-Issue Sexual Assault and Suicide Training; 90-minute Initial Bystander Training; and 60-minute Leadership Training. The training was previously presented under the Green Dot program and concept.

According to Edith Wenger, 377th ABW Violence Prevention Program manager, there will be a difference in this year’s curriculum, aiming for a more grass-roots effort, designed to get people to learn from one another in an interactive way.

Classes for the general public will begin Feb. 5, 2019. Multi-Issue Sexual Assault and Suicide Training classes will be offered Tuesdays at 2 p.m. and Thursdays at 9 a.m.  Initial Bystander Training will occur every third Wednesday of the month at 9 a.m. Leadership Training will occur every fourth Wednesday of the month at 1 p.m.  Training will end at the end of fiscal year (Sept. 30, 2019). Classes will be held at the Base Education Center, Consolidated Support Facility or Parrish Hall.

The Violence Prevention Program delivers mandated training with volunteer instructors whose primary mission is with their assigned units.

“We are very proud of the work they do to support the Violence Prevention Program training mission and recognize their time is very valuable,” said Wenger. “Having full classes helps us to maximize the time that our volunteers provide the program. This year’s training will be treated like a medical appointment; if you register for a class, attendance is expected as it is mandated training. Commanders will be notified when registered attendants miss training.”

Wenger also encouraged those who need the training to begin attempting to take it two months in advance, to ensure there are no last-minute issues.

“The training mission for sexual assault and suicide prevention is a joint effort with those in leadership positions and people of all ranks,” said Wenger. “We might deliver the training, but it’s not going to happen if people don’t come to the training and utilize what they learn.”
