KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- According to the Security Forces and Force Support Squadron commanders, there are two designated areas for RV and camper parking on the installation. The Kirtland Air Force Base Fam Camp, located at 24250 F Street, near the Eubank gate, and the RV storage area located on Kirtland Drive SE, one block west of the Carlisle gate.
“People are parking where they shouldn’t be parking, we are trying to advise people if they are caught parking illegally they will be towed,” said Maj. Shawn Chamberlin, 377th Security Forces Squadron commander. “We acknowledge that there are lot of people with campers that come to visit Kirtland, we just want to ensure that they know where to park where they won’t get towed and won’t have to spend additional fees to get their RV out of a tow lot.”
According to Chamberlin, if a RV or camper is found parked in an unauthorized area, the owner will be ticketed and have three days to move their vehicle. If they haven’t moved the vehicle within 72 hours of being ticketed, they will receive a tow notice and will have another 72 hours to move it then the vehicle will be towed.
“Keeping your RV on base is a lot cheaper than going off base to other locations around the city, its only $2 a day, said Lt. Col. Richard Reed, 377th Force Support Squadron commander.
According to Reed, despite already having two different locations to store RVs and campers, a third location is being built on the installation within the next two years.
