Kirtland Airman to receive Distinguished Flying Cross for valor in Afghanistan

Master Sgt. Greg Gibbs will be awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the oldest and highest American military aviation award, in a ceremony here Jan. 13 at 10 a.m.

Gibbs will be recognized for a rescue mission he took part in in 2011 in Shorbak District, Kandahar Province, Afghanistan. During the mission, he served as the door gunner on an HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopter, attempting to rescue a group of Army Pathfinders hit by improvised explosive devices.

Gibbs is now assigned to the 512th Rescue Squadron here.
