12/3/2010 - Kirtland Air Force Base, NM -- All privately owned weapons stored on Kirtland AFB must be registered with 377th Security Forces Squadron Law Enforcement Armory.

The armory will courtesy store all types of rifles, pistols and shotguns.

However, due to limited space, air guns, paint/pellet guns, crossbows, compound bows, edged weapons, magazines, scopes, add-on equipment, unless permanently mounted, boxes, holsters, rifle cases or any other containers will not be accepted.

All weapons stored in Kirtland Family Housing must be stored in such a way and location to preclude improper usage, especially by children. No weapons can be stored in dormitories or lodging facilities.

Privately owned munitions are authorized for temporary storage; only if the armory Air Force Form 2047, Explosive License limit is not exceeded and space is available.

Except when authorized by current directives, carrying weapons on Kirtland AFB is unlawful.

Carrying weapons in one's vehicle is also unlawful unless the person is proceeding to or from an area designed and authorized for the use of that weapon, such as firearms being carried to and from Kirtland Family Housing when used for hunting or target practice off-base.

Weapons that fire projectiles must be unloaded and will be transported in the trunk, if the vehicle has a trunk.

Items normally used in the preparation of food such as butcher knives and carving knives may be transported and used for their intended purpose at picnics and similar functions, and may be carried between a retail outlet and residences.

Hunting on Kirtland AFB is prohibited unless authorized by the 377th Air Base Wing commander.

Requests must be routed through 377th SFS commander, 377th Air Base Wing safety office and 377th Mission Support Group Civil Engineering division.

For more information, call the armory at 846-7161. The hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
