The Tijeras Arroyo Golf Course is scheduled to host a juniors golf camp for children ages 6 to17 from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m., March 12 to 15, 2019.

The golf camp is for all skill levels and it is not mandatory for participants to bring their own golf clubs. The camp will cost $100 per golfer which includes daily lunches for the participants.

“The juniors golf camp is a great opportunity for young people to learn the game and get started with golf at an early age,” said Patrick Mahoney, Tijeras Arroyo Golf Course manager.

The four-day camp will be led by Ron Allen, Tijeras Arroyo Golf Course Professional Golfers Association professional. Allen, a former educator here in Albuquerque, has played professional golf for five years and has been the PGA pro at Tijeras Arroyo Golf Course for the last two years.

“We’ve had kids that have never grabbed a club before and by the end of the week, those same kids are swinging the club like they have been doing it their entire life,” said Allen.

According to Allen, some children that attended a junior golf camp last year came out of the camp swinging the club like golf professional Rory McIlroy. In order to get to that point, Allen plans to teach the fundamentals of the game.

“Everyone will at least learn how to do four things,” said Allen. “Grip, correct stance, ball position and posture. I try to get them to think about those four things before every swing.”

While those four skills are a foundation to the game, Allen also wants to instill a love for golf that will leave an impression on those attending the camp.

“The more important thing is to get them hooked on learning the game and be passionate about it,” said Allen. “Sure it’s nice to see them hit the ball and swing the club with a balanced finish at the end of the week, but as an educator, it is more important to see that they are hooked and have a sense of passion towards the game.”

As far as preparation goes for the golf camp, Allen has just one suggestion.

“Come ready to have fun,” said Allen.

In addition to the juniors golf camp, the Tijeras Arroyo Golf Course is also holding a March Match Play event that is scheduled to start on the weekend of March 9, 2019.
