377th Maintenance Squadron Airmen inspect, recycle, and load brass
U.S. Air Force Airmen assigned to the 377th Maintenance Squadron inspect, recycle, and load Expended Small Arm Cartridge Casings (ESACCs) on a tow tractor at Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico, March 10, 2026. This inspection ensures all rounds are free of explosive material before being sealed for turn-in to a local recycling center. This step is a vital part of a new, organic base process developed by the 377th MXS to manage the destruction of non-serviceable brass. Once a weight of 2,500 lbs is reached, the ESACCs are transported off-base where Airmen witness their destruction to receive a Certificate of Destruction, as the turn-in of serviceable casings is strictly prohibited. The 377th MXS Munitions Materiel Section manages a $17M arsenal and projects this recycling initiative will generate an annual profit of $60,000 for the 377th Air Base Wing Qualified Recycling Program (QRP). An unarmed Minuteman III Intercontinental Ballistic Missile launches during an operational test at 11:01 p.m. Pacific Time Mar. 3, 2026, at Vandenberg Space Force Base, Calif. ICBM test launches help ensure the U.S. ICBM fleet is ready, reliable and effective. This launch, designated GT 255, was scheduled years ago, and was not in response to world events. It is a key component of a data-driven program that has been in place for decades, involving over 300 similar tests designed to validate the performance of the weapon system. The data collected from these routine tests is essential for ongoing and future force development. (U.S. Space Force photo by Staff Sgt. Joshua LeRoi)
