KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- A day of teamwork and adrenaline especially for junior enlisted Airmen is coming next month.
Outdoor Recreation is leading a trip to Manzano Mountain Retreat from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sept. 17. Participation costs $17 per person and includes lunch and transportation to the retreat 58 miles from base.
ODR Program Specialist Johnnie Harris said the day would involve high- and low-rope obstacle courses and zip-lining.
“If you’re just looking for a great time, high adrenaline, meeting-new-people type of day, I would definitely come,” he said.
Although E1-E4 Airmen are the target audience, anybody with base access can come if there’s space left.
Harris said the rope courses involve teamwork. Participants work their way through hanging obstacles, while attached to safety lines at all times.
ODR Assistant Manager Brooke Nelson said it’s a physical and mental challenge. It also gives people a chance to accomplish something they may not have otherwise and to overcome fears.
“It’s just a real confidence boost, and it’s fun,” she said. “It’s a blast.”
She and Harris recommend the trip for individuals, couples and groups of co-workers.
“Resiliency is a huge part of our mission,” Nelson said.
The travel time gives people a chance to talk and bond, Nelson said, and the courses strengthen teams. Plus, programmers may discuss stressors and resiliency as events progress.
ODR coordinated with the base to offer the activity at an affordable cost.
Space is limited, so people interested should call 846-1385 or come by the ODR office at 8351 Griffin Ave. SE to register as soon as possible.
