The Air Force Distributed Mission Operations Center, 705th Combat Training Squadron has been awarded the Air Force Modeling and Simulation Training Award for 2006.

In 2006, as DMOC's premier event, four Virtual Flag exercises trained approximately 1,700 Joint and Coalition warfighters, including an all-time high of 617 in Virtual Flag 07-1, across 26 weapons systems, from 61 distributed units.

Virtual Flag is a quarterly distributed theater-level mission rehearsal exercise, linking operational and tactical training audiences. The venue includes a robust theater campaign simulated by a virtual air-land-maritime-space-emitter training environment.

The DMOC Virtual Flag exercises are focused on integrated execution of command and control, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance to the shooters. The past year, 705 CTS realigned VF exercises to provide the first-ever virtual AEF spin-up capability, preparing warfighters for combat theater deployments.

"Distributed mission operations and integrated live, virtual and constructive training and are growing in importance to the USAF," said Lt. Col. Don Drechsler, commander of the 705th Combat Training Squadron.

During 2006, DMOC delivered the inaugural live, virtual and constructive training capability for Exercise Northern Edge by digitally increasing opposition air and maritime forces, while introducing virtual and geographically distributed participants.

This effort resulted in the first-ever mix of live and virtual data into a formerly live fly-only exercise, and provided a common operational picture on a scale not seen to date and not possible when in live operations only.

"We are giving warfighters an opportunity to train in the virtual world to enable them to survive in the real world," said Col. Lenny "Mad Dog" Moskal, commander of the 505th Distributed Warfare Group. The 705th CTS/DMOC's winning package moves on to compete at the Department of Defense level, the winner of which will be announced on May 8.
