Memorial Service set for Kirtland sergeant Published April 10, 2008 KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, New Mexico -- A grateful nation mourns the loss of yet another fallen Kirtland Air Force Base warrior. Staff Sgt. Travis Griffin, 28, 377th Security Forces Squadron, died April 3 of wounds suffered when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device while on patrol in Baghdad, Iraq. Sergeant Griffin has been stationed at Kirtland AFB since July 2004 and had been in the Air Force for almost nine years He had been deployed to Iraq since October helping to train Iraqi police forces in Baghdad. His wife and child live in Kentucky. "Sergeant Griffin volunteered for this tough and dangerous duty," said Col. Robert E. Suminsby Jr., 377th Air Base Wing commander. "He stepped up to a demanding mission because he felt he could make a difference. His dedication should be an inspiration to all of us." A memorial service will be held in the base chapel on April 16, at 9 a.m. Please join us in honoring our fallen hero.
