CoRC does not include any drinking, driving Published Dec. 15, 2008 By Capt. Michael S. McCollum 377th Medical Operations Squadron KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, New Mexico -- Alcohol-related misconduct is an ongoing issue in the Air Force and there is no "silver bullet" to make the problem go away. We already know irresponsible drinking plays a major role in many social ills such as domestic violence incidents, suicides, fatal motor vehicle accidents and sexual assaults. Equally importantly, a significant portion of Airmen (E-1 through E-3) have admitted that excessive alcohol consumption negatively impacts their work performance. For Team Kirtland, alcohol misuse can certainly pose a real threat to nuclear surety. There are many different initiatives to reduce alcohol-related misconduct through education, awareness, treatment, teamwork, leadership involvement and Wingmanship. One very important Air Force-wide initiative is our Culture of Responsible Choices. The 0-0-1-3, which means zero drinks if you are under age 21, zero driving under the influence violations, one drink/hour; with no more than three drinks/sitting, was designed to specifically address binge drinking and not driving. Any amount of alcohol use disqualifies you to get behind the wheel of a vehicle. New Mexico has tough laws and if police can prove any degree of impairment, even if blood alcohol levels are below .08 percent, you will be arrested and charged. CoRC also applies to celebrations and parties, especially during the holidays. Be a responsible host if you're throwing a party. How? Here are some great tips: · Set ground rules about alcohol use and never, ever serve anyone underage. · Assign designated drivers (DDs do not drink--period) in advance and be prepared to drive guests home. · Provide food and snacks during the entire event such as cheese, meats, raw vegetables and light dip which act as great "buffers." · Planning fun entertainment such as karaoke, Wii games, or popular board games that encourage participation is an effective way to slow alcohol consumption. · Consider not serving alcohol altogether at least an hour before the party ends. With the Holiday season fast approaching, it is imperative that we as Airmen embrace our Culture of Responsible Choices and make the right choice. Driving under the influence puts everyone at risk, including coworkers, families, young children and all members of the Albuquerque community. If you plan to drink alcohol during the holidays, drink responsibly (0-0-1-3) and include a designated driver in your plans. If your plan falls through, call Kirtland Against Drunk Driving at 853-8888. Remember, safe driving keeps everyone alive and ensures that the AF's most valuable resource, you, get back to the mission after the celebration is over.
