The Air Force Operational Test and Evaluation Center hosted the Presbyterian Healthcare Services Director of Operations for the Process Excellence Department as a guest speaker during its Commander's Conference June 25.

Ms. Alison Stanley spoke to AFOTEC military and civilian leaders about Presbyterian's quality journey using Lean Six Sigma to improve effectiveness and efficiency and eliminate waste.

"The team at Presbyterian Hospital is putting the principles from the 'Checklist Manifesto' by Atul Gawande and 'Good to Great' by Jim Collins in practice with remarkable results," said Maj. Gen. Stephen T. Sargeant, AFOTEC commander.

"Ms. Stanley is a leader in that effort and shared lessons that they have learned along with way during our recent commander's conference so that we can learn from their experiences. We are also on our own journey to sustained excellence and look forward to continuing to share lessons and best practices with each other in the future."

In 2007, Presbyterian adopted Lean Six Sigma as a tool to address the variation in its clinical and business processes, which has resulted in improved efficiency by 30 to 50 percent through relentless process improvement and standardization. According to Ms. Stanley, Presbyterian is experiencing a 121 percent return on investment so far in 2010 by using Lean Six Sigma and model improvement tools.

Before joining Presbyterian in 2007, Ms. Stanley worked for Marsh and McLennan Companies in Orlando, Fla., as an assistant vice president in the Florida Healthcare Practice. Ms. Stanley has a Bachelor of Science degree from the U.S. Military Academy and a Master of Business Administration degree from Dartmouth College's Tuck School of Business.

AFOTEC is a direct reporting unit to the Chief of Staff of the United States Air Force and is the Air Force's independent operational test agency responsible for testing and evaluating new warfighting capabilities developed for the Air Force, and often its joint and coalition partners.
