Back to School Published Aug. 18, 2010 By Master Sgt. Adam Ryan 377th Security Forces Squadron Kirtland Air Force Base, NM -- It's that time of year already. Parents, rigid in joyful anticipation, have been looking forward to this for 2 months. The joy almost outweighs the agony of shopping. The mornings will soon be filled with the sounds of chattering children heading off to school. Kirtland's sidewalks and crosswalks will once again be filled with colorful back to school colors and chaos. The yellow flashing lights will be activated in the school zones and security forces will resemble an occupying military force, securing every square inch of the school grounds and surrounding areas. Expect to see the light detection and ranging system running in both directions of Wyoming and Paintbrush. Patrols will be at Sandia Elementary School to slow traffic down, enforce parking and drop off points and ensure children safely cross the street. Previous years' school blitzes have resulted in hundreds of citations being issued. Here are a few pointers that will ensure the safety of our children: 1. Watch for the flashing yellow school zone lights...they are not a suggestion 2. Reduce your speed to 15 MPH and watch for children in the school zone 3. Remember pedestrians have the right of way. It's not a plot to make you late for work. You didn't miss the meeting we all had at 0500 to discuss the logistics of having the entire installation cross in front of you at the precise time you got to the school zone 4. Adjust your schedule to allow more time if transitioning through a school zone 5. Parents, we are protecting your children. Don't be the one that's running late, trying to beat the bell. You will receive no mercy from us for endangering others' children due to your poor planning 6. Outbound speed limit at Gibson Gate is 15 MPH until after Wherry Elementary where it changes to 35. Don't be under the illusion of thinking the base perimeter ends at the gate. Base property extends to Louisiana Blvd. 7. Crossing guards are not hood ornaments! They are not there for amusement or to create an enjoyable slalom for your morning commute. Obey the directions of posted crossing guards 8. Stop signs and yield signs are different. Don't confuse them in front of a police officer. The officer definitely knows the difference 9. Talking or texting on a cell phone while operating a vehicle is illegal in Albuquerque and on Kirtland Air Force Base. Wait until you are parked or purchase a hands-free device. Although hands-free devices are legal, you are still statistically more likely to be involved in an accident due to the distraction 10. Speed limit in the school parking lot is 5 MPH. Fire zones are clearly marked. Unless you and your children are actively fighting a fire, please do not obstruct these areas.
