The 2011 Air Force Assistance Fund campaign at Kirtland Air Force Base will be March 28 through May 6. The base's goal is to raise $68,589.

"Kirtland has always been very supportive of the AFAF and its Airmen-helping-Airmen outreach," says Chaplain (Capt.)

Jayme Kendall, the campaign project officer. "In addition to exceeding our goal, in this year's drive, we want to achieve 100 percent contact with eligible contributors, to explain the outstanding work the AFAF supports."

In its 38th year, the drive's "commitment to caring" campaign seeks to raise $6.36 million across the service to provide Airmen with a full range of needed services, including financial support from its four charities; the Air Force Aid Society, Air Force Enlisted Village, the Air Force Village and the LeMay Foundation.

From the beginning, AFAF has designated that 100 percent of the contributions benefit active-duty, Reserve, Guard and retired Airmen, surviving spouses and their families.

In 2010, the AFAF provided approximately $7.6 million in assistance to the four charities.

"AFAF is about taking care of our own," says Col. Robert Maness, Kirtland AFB installation commander. "In World War II, Gen. Hap Arnold, Chief of the Army Air Force, recognized the need for Airmen to assist their fellow wingmen by spearheading the creation of the Air Force Aid Society. The AFAF continues to keep that Wingman spirit alive today."

Those interested in volunteering should call Chaplain Kendall at 853-5805.

Contributions to AFAF 2011 can be cash, check, money order or payroll deduction.
