Rain water that falls on Kirtland flows over the land and over impervious surfaces such as streets, parking lots, driveways and sidewalks. Storm water can pick up dripped vehicle fluids, cigarette butts, plastic bags, bottles and other pollutants that flow into gutters, arroyos and storm sewers that eventually discharge to the Rio Grande River.

Storm water is discharged untreated, and can affect the quality of the water in the river for wildlife, recreational uses and drinking water supply. It is the responsibility of the Kirtland AFB community to ensure that storm water is clean and not polluted.

For more information or to report sources of pollution, call 853-5443 or 853-3098.
