The Motorcycle Safety Foundation has certified a new temporary range on Kirtland Air Force Base.

It is in the parking lot just north of the Air Force Research Laboratory building NO. 497, at the corner of Aberdeen and Carlisle. This range temporarily replaces a range that was closed several months ago.

The new range is certified to conduct three different courses; Basic Rider Course; Basic Rider Course 2 -- Skills Practice, and a new Military Sportbike Course.

Classes are primarily for active-duty members, but are open to dependents, contractors and civilians who operate motorcycles on the installation. There are no fees for students to attend and priority will go to active duty.

BRC and BRC2 classes will start in July followed by Military Sportbike Riders Course classes in September after a "train-the-trainer" course here in August. This contracted course will train certified RiderCoaches to teach the newly developed MSRC.

The BRC is an entry-level, learn-to-ride class that consists of classroom activities and on-cycle riding exercises over three days. The first day is classroom work for five hours, followed by two days of five-hours each on the range. Successful completion may lead to a waiver of the motorcycle license skills test and an insurance discount.
Check with your licensing state and insurance company for specific details. Prerequisites: Ability to ride a bicycle, full protective attire, legal age to operate a motorcycle on the street, a valid driver's license and must provide your own street-legal and safe motorcycle.

Basic Rider Course 2 -- Skills Practice is a one-day course (six hours) for riders who already have basic skills. This class offers more indepth riding techniques and procedures than the BRC. The course consists of activities that emphasize personal risk management and selfassessment strategies, and oncycle exercises with emphasis in cornering, braking and swerving. Prerequisites: A valid motorcycle permit, license or endorsement. Riders must provide their own street-legal and safe motorcycle and wear full protective attire.

The MSRC is a one-day course for experienced sport bike riders. This class provides more in-depth riding techniques and procedures than learned in BRC. The course consists of emphasis on personal risk management and self-assessment strategies, and on-cycle exercises with emphasis on cornering, braking and swerving. Prerequisites: A valid motorcycle permit, license or endorsement, affiliation with a military branch, full protective attire and a sport bike that is street-legal and safe.

Each class can support up to 12 students, with a minimum of three to hold the training. A continuing schedule will be developed and posted on the wing safety SharePoint site.
