Open House set for Education Center Published July 29, 2011 By Carl Grusnick 377th Air Base Wing Public Affairs Kirtland Air Force Base -- The annual Kirtland Air Force Base Education Center Open House will be on Aug. 3, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., in Building 20602, just north of the 377th Air Base Wing Headquarters building. "This is our 14th year of hosting the annual open house before the beginning of the fall class schedule," said Linda Campbell, Education Center Community College of the Air Force Advisor and this year's event coordinator. While students can enroll at any time of the year in classes offered by the more than 30 universities and nine educational--affiliated organizations that participate in the open house, fall is traditionally the time most people think of getting "back to the books," adds Campbell. In addition to the educational institutions represented at the open house, counselors will be available to help perspective students achieve their educational goals. "To a new student the world of GI Bill benefits, financial aid application procedures and the like can appear daunting and that's why we're here," says Campbell. Not to be overlooked are the many distance--learning opportunities available. "While the traditional classroom setting is the standard, distance learning is a real option for those with busy schedules," says Campbell. Information on other programs, such as Troops to Teachers, Community College of the Air Force, and commissioning programs, will be available. "The Education Center is an invaluable resource for those who want to advance to the next level," says Campbell. A relatively new program of interest is the Military Spouse Career Advancement Accounts Program. MyCCA is a career development and employment assistance program sponsored by the Department of Defense. It helps military spouses pursue licenses, certificates, certifications or associate's degrees leading to gainful employment. "We encourage interested spouses to attend the open house to learn more about this program and speak with the college representatives," said Cathy Earl, Education Services Manager. The open house is open to the entire Kirtland community. For more information call the Education Center at 846-8955.
