Temperature guidelines set Published Oct. 27, 2011 By Cliff Richardson 377th Civil Engineering Division Kirtland Air Force Base -- As part of Energy Action Month, Kirtland Air Force Base is reminding its Airmen to help conserve the base's energy. Kirtland AFB has partnered with Honeywell, Inc. under an energy savings conservation contract to maintain the temperatures for the base's heating and cooling equipment. The intention is to save energy not to the detriment of personnel comfort, but to use only the amount of energy needed to keep the space heated for proper comfort. Kirtland AFB, as well as all of DOD, is looking for a reduction of three percent in energy use each year through 2015. At the direction of the Energy Management Steering Group, the contractor sets the following guidelines in temperature for comfort based on Air Force guidance and will monitor the temperatures. KAFB Instruction 23-301, Energy Management, implements the following temperature guidelines for the base: · Temperature should be set at 55 degrees for hangars, shops, warehouses, and buildings or sections of buildings where many employees work in a standing position (sorting, stacking, collecting, packing or crating). Temperature should be set at 40 degrees during non duty hours. · Temperature should be set at 68 degrees for offices, classrooms, and other areas where people either sit to work or get little exercise if they stand. Temperature should be set at 55 degrees during non-duty hours. · Temperature should be set at 75 degrees for hospitals, except in administrative areas where 68 degrees is appropriate. · Temperature should be set at 80 degrees for special process rooms. Military family housing residents are encouraged to maintain reduced temperature settings consistent with family needs. Maximum heating temperature range is 68 degrees. A waiver is needed to purchase and use an auxiliary heating device, such as space heaters. A waiver may be obtained through the 377th Civil Engineering Division. If an area of a building is cold, call 846-8222. They will send someone to evaluate and determine the best action to address the problem. For more information about energy conservation, call 846-2657.
