‘School Partners’ Published March 2, 2012 KIRTLAND AFB, N.M. -- Editor's note: As part of Kirtland Air Force Base's partnership with Sandia Base Elementary School, a monthly column will be published highlighting SBES events, volunteer opportunities, and other items of interest. The next Parent/Teacher Association meeting will be at 6 p.m. Monday, March 5, in the school cafeteria. Items of discussion include the recent grade SBES received from the state of New Mexico. All parents of SBES students are encouraged to attend. 'School Partners' is an effort underway among representatives from the base, school administration, teachers and parents to formally organize assistance to SBES. The partnership's initial focus will be organizing volunteers to help with a variety of needs at SBES. The most pressing need is to provide in-classroom academic support, primarily in reading and math, by volunteer tutors during the day, as well as after-school tutoring assistance at the Youth Center. Approximately 30 committed volunteers are needed to support students and teachers on a regular basis. In addition to tutoring, other volunteer areas include cafeteria and playground monitors, assisting teachers with copying classroom materials, grant writing, and assistance in the library.
