New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez announced Monday the 2012 grades for the state's elementary, middle and high schools. Through hard work and dedication, Sandia Base Elementary School earned a "B," up from a preliminary "F" in January.

The Kirtland Air Force Base School Liaison Officer said the improvement was a team effort among volunteers at Kirtland, Sandia Base Elementary School teachers, and the students.

"Our partnership with Albuquerque Public Schools is a top priority, and we will continue to work to improve student performance at Sandia Base Elementary School," said Beth Mann.

Last spring, Team Kirtland answered the call for volunteers and in just two months, more than 50 volunteers provided 133 hours of individual tutoring sessions.

With the new school year right around the corner, Mann said she expects dramatic growth in volunteers.

"We are always looking for volunteer tutors during class hours, as well as after-school tutors at the school and base Youth Center to provide homework assistance," she said.

Col. Don Conley, 377th Mission Support Group commander, said the Kirtland School Partners organization will follow through to ensure the volunteer efforts carry through the coming school year and into the future.

"Our children deserve continued support to improve their performance in school subjects and on standardized tests. Base and APS leadership remain committed to the partnership we have formed."

Prospective volunteers for the upcoming school year can register with the Kirtland AFB School Partners by filling out a registration form available online at KAFBschoolpartners@kirtland.af.mil or they can call the volunteer coordinator at 853-1809.

Volunteer forms are also available in the 377th Mission Support Group commander's office in Building 20604, Room D-3.
