In observance of National Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month in April, the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response (SAPR) office will present a Commander’s Panel open to all Team Kirtland leaders, first sergeants and spouses.

The SAPR team will host the panel presentation from 10 a.m. to noon April 20 at the Air Force Safety Center Auditorium. It will illustrate the process of handling a sexual assault report, including other agencies and their roles in the case progression.

For the first time this year, a commander and first sergeant will sit on the panel to share their experiences and roles in sexual assault cases.

Two case scenarios will be presented. The cases are based on actual Kirtland Air Force Base situations, used with the permission of the survivors with their names changed. This panel will highlight the bias associated with two polarizing cases, discuss the considerations for the victim and suspect, and discuss the responsibilities of the commander and first sergeant in sexual assault reports.

The Sexual Assault Prevention and Response team will also conduct “unit walk-abouts” during the month. They will hand out SAPR goodies, talk with Airmen and get their volunteer victim advocates face time within units.

If you have any questions or would like to arrange for a unit walk-about, call the SAPR office at 846-6297 or 846-5225.
