College costs are on the constant rise and eight students just received a little help to make their college dreams a reality from the Kirtland Officers' Spouses' Club May 15 in a reception at the Mountain View Club.

The KOSC raises funds to sponsor charitable, educational and welfare projects at Kirtland Air Force Base and in the local community, including awarding scholarships to deserving military community students.

Megan Mullins, a 2007 high school graduate, was awarded $1,500.

Laurien Clay, daughter of Barrett and Sindy Clay, was awarded $1,000 and plans on attending Brigham Young University to pursue a career in humanities. Ms. Clay graduated from Cibola High School and was active in National Honor Society, Knowledge Bowl and choir.

Brandalyn Andreasen, daughter of Stephen and Terri Andreasen, was awarded $1,000 and plans on studying microbiology at Brigham Young University. Ms. Andreasen was a member of the French National Honor Society and the National Honor Society.

Ginel Wheaton, daughter of H.L. and Loretta Wheaton, was awarded $500 to pursue her studies at The University of New Mexico, where she plans on studying biology, pre-dental. Ms. Wheaton served as the manager of several athletic teams, was active in DECA and served in the senior house while studying at Sandia High School.

Randall Miskowic, spouse of Teresa Miskowic, was awarded $1,000 as a spouse recipient. Mr. Miskowic will attend The University of New Mexico to study mechanical engineering.

Derek Andrews, son of Henry and Deborah Andrews, was awarded $1,000 as a continuing education student. Mr. Andrews is currently attending Western New Mexico University studying secondary education.

The KOSC gives scholarships annually, ranging from $500 to $1,000 to high school seniors, continuing education students or spouses who have not earned a four-year degree.
Scholarship applicants were judged on SAT and ACT scores, academic honors and awards, school and community involvement, activities, leadership experience, work and volunteer experience, and three letters of recommendation. Applicants were also judged on a 500-word essay based on the topic "how has your association with the military impacted your life."
