Federal voting assistance available to service members

September 27 through October 4, 2020 is Absentee Voting Week.

The Federal Voting Assistance program encourages all military service members, spouses and their eligible family members to take advantage of the resources available at https://www.fvap.gov/military-voter to register and request absentee ballots to vote in the 2020 U.S. elections.

Voter registration and ballot request deadlines for the November 2020 elections are as early as Oct. 5 2020 in some states. Voters should complete a Federal Post Card Application (FPCA) each year to ensure they are able to participate in elections as military absentee voters. Send completed voting forms and ballots to your local election officials.

If you’ve already completed a FPCA in 2020 and requested electronic delivery of your ballot, you’ll be receiving your blank ballot or instructions for how to access your ballot soon, if you haven’t already received it. If you’re not sure about the status of your absentee ballot request, contact local election officials where you’re registered to vote, or check the status of your registration via your state’s voter registration verification website.

To allow time for mail processing and vote counting, return your paper ballot to your election officials by Oct. 5, 2020. After you send in your ballot, you can verify that your election office received it.

Many U.S. elections in the past 10 years have been decided by a margin of less than 0.1%. All states are required to count every absentee ballot as long as it is valid and reaches local election officials by the state’s deadline.

In addition, check out the FVAP links page at https://www.fvap.gov/links for resources that will help you research candidates and issues. You can also read national and hometown newspapers online and search the Internet for information.
