Members of the Kirtland community gathered last week at the Chapel Annex to hear from experts on the Safeguarding Our Children Panel. The Safeguarding Our Children Panel was put in place to help parents learn about ways to keep their children safe from sexual predators.

“The event was held to help parents recognize typical developing behaviors versus behaviors that might let parents know their child has had an adverse [sexual] experience,” said Molly Hayes, flight chief of Child & Youth Services. “Additionally it taught parents how to respond to children during difficult times.”

The panel of five guest speakers included, Maj. John Reardon, 377th mental health flight commander; Dr. Elizabeth Latu, Presbyterian Healthcare Services psychologist; Dr. Shalon Nienow, medical director at Para Los Ninos; Ms. Hayes; and a Child Military Family Life Counselor from Kirtland.

“Most parents strive to be the best parents they can be,” said Hayes. “Opportunities like these help them make good choices.”

Hayes advised for anyone unable to attend to use correct anatomical terms for body parts when helping children understand appropriate and inappropriate interactions with other people. Also, she encouraged parents to establish patterns of open communication with their children from the time they are young.

“Keep communication lines open so they are not afraid to tell you of adverse experiences,” said Hayes. “And even with open communication, often children won't tell their parents, so try introducing them to another safe adult to talk to.”

Hayes stressed the importance of knowing when to seek the help of professionals, like the chaplain, Mental Health Services, military life consultants or counselors, sooner rather than later.
