Air Force Research Lab New Mexico hosts student robotics competition

Middle school students from around the state will be showing off their robotics skills at the Air Force Research Laboratory’s Robotics Challenge Expo this week.

Thirty student teams competed to earn a spot at the Expo taking place March 2 here.

The students spent the last several months learning computer programming and robotics skills.

Working in teams, they completed online assignments and quizzes, with the top scorers qualifying for the Expo.

During the event, students will demonstrate what they have learned by sending their robots through various obstacle courses and competing in a robot costume contest and quiz bowl.

AFRL scientists and engineers will judge the competitions. Some will also be bringing their own robots to show the students, including a replica of Disney’s Wall-E.

The Robotics Challenge Expo is part of its AFRL New Mexico’s “Week at the Lab” festivities.

National Week at the Labs runs Feb 27-March 3, and aims to expose kids to the work being done at federal laboratories and connect it to their math and science classes.
