KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. --

The Legal Office is preparing for the opening of the Kirtland Air Force Base Tax Center, and is looking for volunteers to dedicate their time in supporting our military families and retirees.

The Tax Center, opening in February 2017, offers a variety of free tax services, including preparing tax returns, to our active-duty, dependents, and military retirees. Last tax season, volunteers prepared 1,411 federal and state tax returns, saving clients roughly $136,000 in preparation and filing costs.

The program is operated entirely by volunteers. To ensure the center can continue to provide this service, the center is seeking additional volunteers. Volunteers can be military, dependents, military retirees or DOD civilian employees, and generally have varying degrees of tax experience.

Volunteers receive five days of Volunteer Income Tax Assistance training, which starts Jan. 9 and should plan to spend a total of 40 hours or more volunteering in the tax center during its period of operation of from February through April 15.

If you have additional questions, or are interested in volunteering, contact 1st Lt. Christopher Mitchell at 505-846-4223 or by email at christopher.mitchell.48@us.af.mil.
