Military Personnel Data System upgrade in December

Posted 10/2/2012   Updated 10/2/2012 Email story   Print story

10/2/2012 - KIRTLAND AFB, N.M. -- The Air Force Personnel Center will be performing a mass update to the Military Personnel Data System from Dec. 3 through approximately Dec. 26, to migrate the system to a more secure framework. During that period, no Personnel transactions may be updated through that system, so officials encourage customers to accomplish these actions before the deadlines below to ensure their records are up-to-date for the change. All Airmen should check their Virtual MPF records for any transactions they may need to complete before the upgrade begins.

How will this affect my personnel record?
Certain actions, including Re-enlistment, Extension, Base of Preference, and Retraining, need to be accomplished well in advance of the Dec. 3 deadline to ensure enough time for completion of the action. Refer to the timetable if you are completing these actions to ensure that you meet the suspense. For other actions, including Assignments, Separations, and Evaluations, your information will be pulled early and tracked manually during the switch, and then updated once the new system comes online.

If an Airman is considering any of the following during December 2012

Applying for re-enlistment, extension or separation:
Submit application to the 377th Force Support Squadron by Oct. 29

Completing a base of preference application:
Submit application to the Air Force Personnel Center by Nov. 1

Completing an in-place base of preference application:
Submit application to AFPC by Nov. 1

Applying for voluntary retraining:
Submit application to AFPC by Nov. 15

Scheduling DLPT test for Foreign Language Proficiency Bonus:
Submit application to FSS/MSS by Nov. 15

Updating Servicemembers Group Life Insurance:
Submit application to FSS/MSS and AFPC by Nov. 16

Re-enlisting (if delayed, SRB could pay in January 2013 and December 2013, which could increase income tax):
Submit application to FSS/MSS and AFPC by Nov. 16

Extending current enlistment:
Submit application to FSS/MSS and AFPC by Nov. 16

How will this affect pay?
Most transactions will not affect pay. For certain ones, including Accessions, Department of Defense Benefits/Entitlements, Retirements, Separations or Re-enlistments during the upgrade, the Military Personnel Section will send the transaction data through AFPC directly to DFAS for processing. Non-critical pay-affecting updates, including Promotion, Special Duty and Bonus pay, will be delayed until after the upgrade. Pay actions held during the migration will be retroactive to the actual effective date. Officials encourage customers to perform these transactions before MilPDS goes offline, so pay is correct before the 23-day upgrade period.

When will transactions appear in military personnel records after the system upgrade?
The Military Personnel Section will have a prioritized list of transactions to complete once the MilPDS system becomes available, on or about Dec. 26. Critical pay-affecting cases will be input by each section first, followed by non-critical pay-affecting issues and other non-critical actions. The MPS will track each individual's case manually during this time, to ensure that the actions are completed at the first opportunity once the system is available. It will take the MPS some time to process the 23 days' worth of transactions, so keep a record of the action for your reference until it is updated in your Military Personnel record. Most held transactions will then be updated within 10 business days.
